I was called out recently to open up a safe that had been in a home fire. The owner told me that he had over $100,000 in guns in the safe and some were his Dad's that were captured in World War II and not replaceable.
Upon arrival, the owner told me at least I had purchased a good fire safe. I paid over $4,500 for this safe to protect my investment.
I warned him to not be optimistic based on the appearance of the safe.
The picture shows this safe as it was opened up.
He purchased a safe with a good Underwriter's Laboratory burglary label. It had a manufacturer's fire rating but not an Underwriter's Laboratory fire label. These are two very different things. The manufacturer was protected as there was no one with a stopwatch timing the fire and how long the unit was under extreme heat. This is a bit of a scam on the part of some manufacturer's. It is a hard thing to prove in court.
This man lost everything in his safe.
Had he talked to me prior to the purchase, I might have directed him to a better safe for his purposes.
